Child theme generator

Changes made directly in a theme are erased by the next theme update. The Child theme tool (Baza Helper > Child theme) makes a child theme so your own changes live in a separate folder.

Check the status

The Status card tells you which case you are in: the active theme is already a child, the active theme has a child installed (activate it below), or the active theme has no child and an update will erase direct changes.

Create a child theme

  1. Under New child theme choose Based on theme, normally the active theme.
  2. Fill Name (the default is the parent’s name plus Child), Folder (letters, digits and dashes; a number is added if the folder exists), Description, Author and Version.
  3. Choose Load the parent stylesheet: Automatically (classic themes only), Always or Never.
  4. Optionally keep Own stylesheet: assets/css/child.css and Own script: assets/js/child.js. They are empty files loaded after the theme’s styles and in the footer.
  5. Optionally list the parent’s template files in Copy template files from the parent, separated by commas. A file in the child replaces the parent’s. functions.php is never copied.
  6. Optionally tick Copy the parent’s Customizer settings and menu places and Activate it right away.
  7. Press Create child theme.

The child is made in wp-content/themes. Use Activate in the status card when you did not activate it at once.
