How to Set Up Google Ads with Baza Helper: the Tag and the Conversions
Baza Helper loads the Google Ads tag and sends the conversions for you. You fill in a few fields in Analytics & Verification, in the section Analytics & Tracking. This guide goes through the fields, the consent options, the speed options and the checks.
Before you start
- Turn on the tracking manager in Baza Helper > Analytics & Verification. The first steps are in the tracking setup guide.
- Have a Google Ads account with a conversion action (Goals, then Conversions).
- Remove any other plugin or snippet that loads the same Google Ads ID.
Do not paste the Google tag by hand
Google Ads shows a snippet called the Google tag. Do not paste it into your theme or into another plugin. Baza Helper loads the Google tag itself from the ID. If you add both, the page has two tags with the same ID, and Google’s own screen warns that only one may be added.
Step 1: add the ID
- Open Baza Helper > Analytics & Verification, in the group SEO & analytics, and find the section Analytics & Tracking.
- In Google Ads Conversion ID (AW-…) enter your ID, for example AW-123456789.
- Save.
With only the ID, the tag is the plain Google tag. It counts the page view, which is what remarketing and audiences need. It does not record any conversion yet.
Step 2: add the label and the events
A conversion needs the label of the conversion action. To find it, open Google Ads, then Goals, then Conversions, open the conversion action, go to Tag setup and choose to install the tag yourself. The event snippet has a line like send_to: ‘AW-123456789/AbC-D_efG-h12345678’. The label is the part after the slash, here AbC-D_efG-h12345678. The ID and label of the Google tag alone are not enough: you need the event snippet.
- In Google Ads Conversion Label enter that part.
- In Google Ads mapped events (comma separated) enter the events that count as the conversion. Step 3 explains which.
- Save.
With a label and at least one event, the tag stops sending its own page view and sends a conversion to the ID and label every time a mapped event happens.
Step 3: choose the events
Baza Helper sends these event names:
- generate_lead and form_success: a form was sent.
- form_submit.
- booking_complete: a booking was paid or confirmed.
- phone_click and email_click: a click on a phone number or an e-mail address.
- outbound_click: a click on a link that leaves the site.
- Your own events, set with the data-track-event attribute.
One conversion action in Google Ads is one label, and it should hold the events that mean the same thing for your business. Map the event that means a real lead, usually generate_lead, and not every click. The settings hold one label, so use one conversion action for the result you want to optimise for.
With Track forms automatically, any form counts except search, login, comment and cart forms. A form that opens a thank-you page needs no separate tag: the event fires when the form reports success.
Consent
By default the Google Ads tag loads after the visitor agrees to marketing. Two options change what happens before that.
Load Google tags before consent (Consent Mode)
When it is on, the Google tag loads at once in the denied state of Google Consent Mode: it sets no cookies, identifies nobody and sends only anonymous pings. Google Tag Assistant and the Ads conversion test then find the tag, and the tag starts to use cookies when the visitor accepts. Use it together with the cookie banner. Where the law forbids even anonymous pings before consent, leave it off.
The cookie banner
The banner has two options for visitors who have not chosen yet: Count visitors who have not chosen yet (analytics only) and Count visitors who have not chosen yet (marketing too). The second one makes Google Ads and Meta Pixel work from the first page, until the visitor presses Reject. Without it, a visitor who ignores the banner is never counted for Google Ads. Use these options only where the law allows it.
If Require consent before provider loading is on and the site has no banner, nothing ever loads. Turn on the cookie banner, or connect your own banner.
Speed
- Load analytics scripts after the first touch (or 4 seconds) waits for the first touch, key press or scroll, or for four seconds.
- Load the tags when the page is idle waits until the page has finished loading and the browser is idle.
A tag that loads without waiting for consent still waits for the page to finish loading. Cookies are set a moment later, before the visitor does anything.
Click ids and extra parameters
The gclid, gbraid and wbraid of an ad click are kept for 30 days, as the first touch, only after the visitor agrees to analytics (Consent-based attribution). A page whose address carries parameters other than UTM and click ids, for example ?foo=1, sends nothing. This is a privacy guard, so keep only UTM and click ids in your ad links.
Check that it works
- Turn on Administrator-only event debugger. It shows which events would reach GoogleAds.
- Open the site and do the action, for example send the form. The event must show a GoogleAds destination.
- In Google Tag Assistant, the tag AW-… must appear once.
- In Google Ads, the conversion action changes to Recording conversions after the first real conversion. You can also send a test conversion from Tag Assistant.
Troubleshooting: why the conversion does not arrive
Go through the causes in this order. The examples use AW-XXXXXXXXXX and a label in place of real values.
There is no consent yet
Baza Helper drops a conversion event when the visitor has accepted neither analytics nor marketing. The option Load Google tags before consent (Consent Mode) loads the tag early, but it does not send conversions before consent: a conversion is sent only after the visitor agrees. To check, open the browser console on your site and run ULPTracking.getConsent(). Analytics or marketing must be true. Accept the cookie banner first, then test.
Google cannot see the tag
Google Tag Assistant and the Google Ads check look for the tag on the page. Turn on Load Google tags before consent (Consent Mode), so that the tag loads at once in the denied state and they can find it. Where the law forbids even anonymous pings before consent, for example for visitors in the EEA or the UK, leave the option off and test with the banner accepted.
The address has unknown parameters
A page whose address carries a query key that may hold visitor data loads no tag and sends no event. The accepted keys are utm_*, gclid, gbraid, wbraid, fbclid, lang, page_id and p, and the ids that ad platforms and Google tools add: utm_id, dclid, gclsrc, gad_source, gad_campaignid, msclkid, yclid, ttclid, _gl, gtm_debug, gtm_auth, gtm_preview and gtm_cookies_win. Google Ads auto-tagging adds gad_source and gad_campaignid, and Google Tag Assistant adds gtm_debug.
Versions of Baza Helper released before these keys were allowed blocked such addresses, and the tag and the conversion did not work. Update the plugin, or test on an address without them. Any other key, for example ?foo=1 or ?email=, still blocks the page.
The form is sent without AJAX
Contact Form 7 reports a sent message with a script event, and Baza Helper turns it into generate_lead. If the Contact Form 7 script is unloaded by a rule such as contact-form-7 @front in Scripts and styles, the form is sent as an ordinary page request, the event does not fire and no generate_lead is sent. A sign of this is a thank-you page address that ends with #wpcf7-… and a number. Remove the rule.
Be careful with Scan the home page in Scripts and styles. It may offer contact-form-7 as unneeded on a page that has a form, so do not tick it there.
Google Ads shows Inactive or Unverified
These statuses only say that Google has not yet seen the tag fire for the conversion action. They are not a setup error by themselves. Check the other causes, send a test lead and wait.
Check with Google Tag Assistant
In Google Tag Assistant, run the conversion check on your site. When everything works, it reports that the conversion action is sending data to Google Ads.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | What you see | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The Google tag is pasted by hand next to the plugin’s | Two tags with the same ID | Remove the pasted tag and keep the ID in Baza Helper. |
| An ID without a label | The tag only counts pages, and the conversion action stays at No recent conversions | Add the label from the event snippet and map an event. |
| A label from another account or another action | No conversions for the action you watch | Copy the label again from the conversion action you use. |
| The events are not mapped | The debugger shows the event but no GoogleAds destination | Write the event name in Google Ads mapped events. |
| Require consent is on and there is no banner | Nothing ever loads | Turn on the cookie banner, or connect your own. |
| A second analytics plugin with the same ID | Every visit is counted twice | Let only one plugin send events. |
| The landing page address has extra parameters | Nothing is sent, because of the privacy guard | Use only UTM and click ids in the ad link. |
